Open Word and create a new document. Select the Insert tab. Click on Page Number. Choose Top of Page and select Plain Number 3. This is put the page number in the top right corner of the paper.

On the Options Tab, you will see 3 choices under Header and Footer Tools Design:

Different First Page
Different Odd and Even Pages
Show Document Text (This one should be checked)

Place a check next to Show Document Text if your style guide is MLA or if your style guide is APA.

Place a check next to Different First page AND Show Document Text if your style guide is Chicago/Turabian or if your style guide is APSA.

To see examples of different page numberings, click on the style guide above.

You will need to format the font to match the rest of the document.  Click the Home Tab, change the font style and size to match your style guide.

If you are using MLA,

• Type your LastName press the space bar 1 time and then type in the number 1 (If the 1 is already there, just type your last name and press the space bar 1 time to put a space between your last name and the page number)
• If your last name and page number are in the wrong location, Click the Home tab, click the Align Right Symbol in the Paragraph section to move it to the right side of the header. (When you hold the mouse over the symbol it will read "Align Right (Ctrl+R)"

If you are using APA, you are good to go!

For Chicago/Turabian and APSA, follow these steps:

After you have formatted the font and size correctly, go back to the Insert Tab.  Click on Page Number, Format Page Numbers in the drop-down menu. In the popup box, in the bottom section, under Page numbering, click the circle next to Start at:.  Type in the number your instructor has told you to use.  Some instructors want this page numbered as the first page so you would type a 1 in the top right column, but others want this page numbered as the second page. You would then type the number 2.  When in doubt, ASK!!
