I need to insert page numbers in Word 365.
Answer
Open Word 365 and create a new document. Select the view tab, then select Header and Footer. You will then see a 3-column table across the top of the page. Then select Options just below and to the right. You will then be presented with 4 choices:
- Same across Entire Document
- Different First Page
- Different Even and Odd Pages
- Different First, Even and Odd Pages
Choose 1. Same across Entire Document if your style guide is MLA or if your style guide is APA.
Choose 2. Different First Page if your style guide is Chicago/Turabian or if your style guide is APSA..
To see examples of different page numberings, click on the style guide above.
If you chose 1. Same across Entire Document:
- Move cursor to the right most column
- If your style is MLA:
- Type your LastName press the space bar 1 time and then type in the number 1
- Move your cursor to the darker area of the screen below the header and begin typing your paper
- If your style if APA;
- Type the number 1
- Move the cursor to the darker area of the screen below the header and begin typing your paper
If you chose 2. Different First Page
- On the left side of the screen, you will see 2 tabs, First Page and Other Pages
- First Page: No page number is used on this page so leave the top right column blank
- Other Pages: Type in the number your instructor has told you to use. Some instructors want this page numbered as the first page so you would type a 1 in the top right column, but others want this page numbered as the second page. You would then type the number 2. When in doubt, ASK!!
